Having been to Hawaii many times we have quite a good idea of the lay of the land in terms of wining and dining in Waikiki. Mr SFH tends to want to stick to those we know and love but I always like to try something new, so we compromise and do a little of both. We are on a budget this trip so fine dining is off the agenda but we don’t just want to do fast food and take away sandwiches from the ABC store either. Thankfully it is still possible to eat well without breaking the bank. Read on for all the details …

5 Options For Dining In Waikiki On A Budget
Buho Cocina y Cantina (New 4.5/5)
Buho offers a modern take on Mexican cuisine in a great location in the heart of Waikiki. If you didn’t know this place was here you could easily miss it. It’s on the fourth floor above Victoria’s Secret but all you can see from the street is a discreet sign next to an elevator, but trust me it’s worth hunting down. The decor is all modern dark wood and not at all the Mexican kitsch you might expect. Most tables are open air which is exactly what you want on a balmy summer’s night. The drinks menu is impressive and we had a couple of skinny cocktails to start. The table next to us opted for the watermelon bowl ($60) which looked pretty impressive but I just don’t think we could have gotten through it all. The innovative menu offers plenty to choose from and we started with the Queso Fundido which arrived promptly. The dip lacked the kick we are used to and we added some hot sauce to help it along which improved it greatly. For mains we shared the Buho Fajitas made with Jidori chicken. We needed three extra tortillas to make this work but this was no problem for the kitchen. Again they were a little lacking in heat, so we added hot sauce to make them more to our liking. The dessert menu looked impressive and we were keen to try the Churros and the Habenero Brownie but were just to full to give it a go. We are planning on heading back tomorrow night to rectify that! $60 – one starter, one main and two cocktails, including tip.
